I am not certain if any of my family and friends truly know what a blog is. I am even more certain they don’t have a clue about how my blog makes money. It still feels weird when I talk to a new person about it, mainly because so few people in my circle blog or even know what it really is.
Many of my fans (and friends of fans) on social media ask me a blogging question every chance they get, which I find flattering.
I never thought that someone would come to me for blogging advice. I even have fans and my supporters asking to hire me as their consultant, business coach if you will, to Skype with them for a day and show them how to start a blog and go through everything with them.
The other day, I received a message on my Facebook Fan Page and one loyal follower told me that – my blog opened his eyes up to a whole new world of possibilities.
Like with my story, I never thought about blogging before I actually started. I knew nothing about it and I didn’t know anyone who blogged. Now that I’m blogging and making a real income, my hope is to get those around me interested in blogging as well.
Since everyone is always asking me for blogging advice, I have decided to make a blog post about this. Starting a brand new blog can be a little scary and overwhelming, but hopefully with my tips below you can start a successful website.

- Start on WordPress.
I made a very detailed post about this last year. Whatever you do, try to skip Blogger and start right away on WordPress. With Blogger, yes, it is FREE to start your blog, but I don’t think it’s worth it.
Also, I created a guide on starting your WordPress blog on BlueHost. The steps are very easy, and you can do it all on your own.
It may be worth it to have a free blog if you’re not even sure if you want to blog. This way you don’t have to put any money into it until you are sure. BUT, in almost all other cases I think you should start immediately on WordPress. It doesn’t cost much to start a blog from scratch.
I made the mistake of staying on Blogger for far too long… It’s one of my biggest blogging regrets!

- Find a niche.
This is not exactly a need, but finding a niche to blog about can be a great thing. There are so many topics out there that are waiting for you to blog about.
Some ideas include:
- Chris Inc. is primarily a business and personal finance website, but I also blog about relationships and my fitness along with health and wellness.
- Travel blogs are one of my favorite niches to read because my wife and I plan to do plenty of traveling.
- Sports
- Music
- Food
- Fashion
If you have a favorite blog, share the link below. I always love finding new websites!
- Have personality.
If you sound like a dead in all of your posts, I think it would be very hard for anyone to enjoy reading your blog. You should inject as much swag as you can into your posts.
My favorite blogs are ones where the authors have practical advice along with awesome personalities that I can relate to. They can turn a lame subject into something that I actually want to read. I also like to read about how REAL people solve problems.
- Produce high-quality content.
Content is King: If you are going to blog, always make sure to produce high quality content. If you are pumping out content that adds no value to people lives, then you are just wasting your time.
- Get on social media.
If you want to be a blogger, it’s imperative to have a Twitter and Facebook account. Even if you don’t understand it, start an account and just go with it.
Whenever I tell a new blogger this tip, they almost ALWAYS tell me that they don’t get any likes or engagement or Facebook and simply don’t understand social media in general. However, once you get started its life changing, and a great compliment to your blog.
Social media is also a great way to network with your fans and as well as other bloggers who are doing their thing.
- Don’t get caught up with your stats.
When you are blogging, it is very easy to check your statistics and analytics all the time. I can’t blame you for doing that. I’m guilty of it too. You are probably curious as to whether or not someone is actually reading your blog, and numbers may help you determine if you are doing something right or wrong.
It is important to not get carried away with it though. If you find yourself checking your stats every 5 minutes, then you are probably checking it too much! Don’t obsess over it. Restrict yourself to only checking it once a day or once every three days.
- Make sure all of your links work.
One thing that really bothers me with a blog is when there are links that don’t lead anywhere. Always make sure that links, no matter where they are (i.e. in your sidebar, etc.) work and link to the correct destination.
